Interior Additions

Nothing makes an old home feel like new quite like a Home Remodeling Project. An Interior Addition or Renovation can completely transform the look and feel of a home. As your tastes change, your family grows, or you decide to have a lifestyle change, you may find an Interior Addition to be the best way for you to fall in love with your home all over again. American Custom Construction (ACC) can Renovate, Remodel and Add to your home to help you make the changes that work best for you and your family.

By converting a basement into a playroom or adding an in-home office area, you can open up other spaces in your home for different uses. Adding a sun-room, some new cabinets, or redoing the floors with wood or ceramic tiles are all great ways to make a dramatic change in the look and feel of your home. We’re all in need of more space in our houses. When you want an entirely new room—like another bathroom, office, bedroom or sewing room—you put in an Addition. If you want a room that brings the outdoors in, you can add a sunroom.

Just need a little bit more space added to a room to make it function better? That’s called a bump out. A bump out extending five feet from the house, at ten feet wide, would in most cases not be considered a major space-maker. That’s just 50 square feet. Bump outs are usually added in rooms that already quite small, though. So, a 200 square foot kitchen, when bumped out another 50 sq. ft., receives a space increase of about a quarter.

While not rigid rules, the following provide a general profile for the majority of bump outs:

  • They Extend from the house between 2 to 8 ft
  • When added to an upper story, a bump out may be unsupported by posts for as far as 2 feet making it cantilevered.
  • No additional heating or cooling is required
  • They can need added horizontal bracing to make up for lost studs
  • They typically serve only a single function
  • They have a flat roof or shed rather than extending the existing roof
  • Not meant to substantially change the exterior of the house; only to add inside space

While the total cost of a bump out will most likely be less than that of a full-size Addition, a bump out will probably cost more per square foot. This is because a large part of the cost is in initiating the project, making drawings, pulling permits, opening up the side of the house, pouring a footer, calling in an electrician to move wires, and so on. You most likely need to do the same things with a bump out as you do with a full Addition.

Because bump outs are not full rooms, they tend to enhance an existing room. They can:

  • Add room for book shelves or a window seat
  • Allow for tub installation in a small bathroom
  • Adda length of counter, stove, and fridge to a kitchen
  • Increase floor space in the main area, so you can install a kitchen island
  • Have an eating area in the kitchen with the extra space
