To renovate means to restore to good condition, repair, or refresh.  You may have heard the term used when describing a construction project being performed on a historic home or an older house.  If a house is being renovated it means it is being restored to its original condition, or being brought back to new condition.  A renovation is ideal if you are trying to preserve the existing charm of your home, while freshening it up and making it beautiful.

Example: If you want to preserve the existing layout of your kitchen, but want to reface the cabinets and add new granite countertops, this would be a renovation project.  In this case you are refreshing the existing components of your kitchen, but not completely altering them or starting from scratch.

Home Remodeling

To remodel is to alter a structure.  This means you are completely changing something about your home.  If you are completely reconfiguring a room in your home or are repurposing a room in your home, this may be a remodeling project.  Knocking down walls to create an open floor plan or adding a bump out to a room would also be considered remodeling projects.

Example: You want a brand new kitchen, and you want to completely reconfigure the layout of the existing one.  You intend to move electrical and plumbing and knock down a wall to create more space.  You have no intention of preserving any of the original kitchen, and want to start completely from scratch.  This is most certainly a remodeling job, and not a renovation.
