  • Finished Basements South Jersey – Adding Value and Space Through A Remodeled Basement

    Posted in:

We have talked in previous blogs about the potential that finished basements have for adding space to your home, but it is also important to consider the value added to your home when you decide to remodel as well.  Naturally, adding living space to your home is valuable and will add dollar signs should you go to sell the home, but the some additions will add more value than others.  Wondering how you should finish your basement?  Here are some important things to consider:

Basements Are A Blank Canvas – A basement is a huge space that usually lacks walls and partitions.  Don’t be afraid to wall off spaces in your basement to add separate rooms.  While an open plan can be nice, it isn’t ideal for all situations.  Consider what is most practical for your family and go from there.

Add an Office – If you home doesn’t have a home office, it is a smart idea to add one in your basement.  Many people work from home or have to occasionally work from home, and others may want one as a place for kids to do homework or a place for them to pay bills and organize.  Whatever the case, adding a room with internet and cable hookups perfect for an office will pay off in the end.

Add A Guest Suite – If the upstairs of your home isn’t ideal for accommodating guests, you can create a guest suite in the basement.  This can include a bedroom and a bath.  Your guests may like the privacy a basement can offer, and you probably won’t mind it yourself.  Not to mention, this allows you to sell your home with an extra bed and bath, which can never hurt the value.

Add Family Space – I didn’t say kid space, because a versatile space is best to suit the needs of a variety of buyers.  Creating a large and open space in your basement allows homeowners options for how they use it.  It could be the ultimate kids playground, or maybe a family room where everyone gathers to watch movies and play games.  A built in entertainment unit could work for both, and built in storage is a plus for housing kids toys or your movie collection.  Practical living space will be a hit with all buyers.

Keep Some Storage – While you may live the minimalist lifestyle, not everybody does.  It is a good idea to keep some unfinished storage in the basement.  You never know when it may come in handy for you, and future buyers will like having options for storing their stuff if they choose to use it.  A basement was intended for storage, after all, so it is important to keep a little bit of that practical space available.
